A trunk, a cello, a piece of bread, a prosthesis, a gas mask, a shaving kit, an identification tag, a handkerchief, overshoes, two puppets. Ten objects for a web of stories spanning from World War I to the present day. Ten objects were chosen from the rich MITAG collection: they are not the most relevant or iconic, but simple, everyday objects. They are the ones that visitors often overlook because they are displayed alongside many others or next to larger or more recognizable items. The project began in the spring of 2024 with six meetings led by artist Martina Melilli with Anna Pisetti, head of the museum’s educational services, designed as creative storytelling workshops but also as opportunities to create new relationships between the museum and the community.
About fifty people of different ages, backgrounds, and education levels were involved. These people chose to share an experience and a testimony, more or less personal, of their own lives. Faced with unknown and often difficult-to-interpret objects, they drew on their experiences, family memories, but also their imagination and fantasy. Their voices open each episode and immediately reveal the thousand stories hidden in each object.
In the construction of the podcast, moving between fiction and reality, the objects have come to life and found a voice: they speak in the first person, investigating their own identity, which is sometimes fragile, ambiguous, and uncertain. Their experiences are those of people who fought, who fled, who survived, who managed to preserve moments of normality during wartime, who try to explain what it meant to live ‘inside’ the First World War.
These testimonies are accompanied by the voices of experts: historians and scholars who have created a bridge between the objects and broader events, but also between the past and the present. Their contributions reconstruct historical events and clarify the context in which the individual narratives are set. Their account is enriched by the voices of witnesses, usually preserved in archives or books: soldiers, prisoners, refugee women, nurses; voices that speak of the First World War and other wars, including contemporary ones. The many voices in this podcast ask us what it means to live in a war today, reminding us that the power of words helps us to open up to others and overcome boundaries, differences, and distances.
Un baule, un violoncello, un pezzo di pane, una protesi, una maschera antigas, un set da barba, un piastrino di riconoscimento, un fazzoletto, delle sovrascarpe, due burattini. Dieci oggetti per un intreccio di storie tra Prima guerra mondiale e il presente.
Dalla ricchissima collezione del MITAG, sono stati scelti dieci oggetti: non sono i più rilevanti o iconici ma oggetti semplici, di uso quotidiano. Sono quelli che spesso i visitatori non notano perché esposti insieme a molti altri o vicino a materiali più grandi o riconoscibili. Il progetto ha preso avvio nella primavera 2024 con sei incontri condotti dall’artista Martina Melilli con Anna Pisetti, responsabile dei Servizi educativi del museo, pensati come laboratori di narrazione creativa ma anche come occasioni per creare nuove relazioni tra museo e comunità. Sono state coinvolte circa cinquanta persone di età, provenienza e formazione diverse. Queste persone hanno scelto di condividere un’esperienza e una testimonianza, più o meno personale, del proprio vissuto. Poste di fronte ad oggetti sconosciuti e spesso difficili da interpretare, hanno fatto ricorso a esperienze, memorie familiari ma anche a fantasia e immaginazione. Le loro voci aprono ogni puntata e mostrano in maniera immediata le mille storie nascoste in ogni oggetto.
Nella costruzione del podcast, muovendosi tra finzione e realtà, gli oggetti hanno preso vita e voce: parlano in prima persona, indagano la propria identità, talvolta fragile, ambigua, incerta. Il loro vissuto è quello di chi ha combattuto, di chi è fuggito, di chi è sopravvissuto, di chi è riuscito a custodire momenti di normalità in tempo di guerra, di chi cerca di spiegare cos’ha significato vivere “dentro” alla Prima guerra mondiale. A queste testimonianze, sono state affiancate le voci di persone esperte: storici e studiosi che hanno creato un ponte tra gli oggetti e vicende più ampie ma anche tra passato e presente. I loro interventi ricostruiscono le vicende storiche e chiariscono il contesto nel quale inserire le singole narrazioni. Il loro racconto è arricchito dalle voci dei testimoni, solitamente conservate negli archivi o nei libri: soldati, prigionieri, donne profughe, infermiere; voci che parlano di Prima guerra mondiale e di altre guerre, anche contemporanee. Le molte voci di questo podcast ci interrogano su cosa significa vivere oggi dentro ad una guerra, ricordandoci che la forza delle parole aiuta ad aprirsi all’altro e a superare confini, differenze e distanze.
