For MITAG Italian Historical Museum of War in occasion of the exhibition “E noi che ne sappiamo? Riflessioni sul colonialismo italiano” (What do we know about it? Reflections on the Italian colonialism), 2025-2026.
I see you. You must look at me. is a work focused on presence: the presences that inhabit space, memory, our history; presences that are not always visible, not always identifiable, but unquestionable, asking us to be seen, looked at, and recognized. The images printed on cotton sheets that populate the exhibition space are taken from a series of photographs preserved in the museum’s archive: faces and gazes that are secondary in the logic of the image, but central in their gesture, challenging the photographer’s point of view and questioning the visitor, asserting their existence and asking not to be ignored. The cotton cloth resembles a shroud on which the images are imprinted and remain, reaching out to us, touching us. The sand scattered along the path remains in our footsteps even when we leave, like past history, which follows us, even if we sometimes wish it were not so, and retains traces of our passage. Part of the installation is dedicated to objects: what do the sounds deposited in their fibers tell us? What invisible traces do bodies, stories, and absences leave on them? The sounds produced by these materials have been recorded through close manipulation, inspired by the practice of ASMR, often on analog media. The recordings also include the ambient noises of the warehouses where these objects are usually stored and have not been subjected to any post-production processing. The intervention proposes a listening experience that questions the way in which institutions preserve, select, and sometimes remove the signs of their past.
Io ti vedo. Tu devi guardarmi. è un lavoro incentrato sulla presenza: le presenze che abitano lo spazio, la memoria, la nostra storia; presenze non sempre visibili, non sempre identificabili, ma indubitabili che ci chiedono di essere viste, guardate e riconosciute. Le immagini stampate su teli di cotone che popolano lo spazio della mostra sono estratte da una serie di fotografie conservate nell’archivio del museo: volti e sguardi secondari nella logica dell’immagine, ma centrali nel loro gesto, che sfidano il punto di vista del fotografo e interrogano chi visita, rivendicando la loro esistenza e chiedendo di non essere ignorati. Il telo di cotone ricorda un sudario su cui si imprimono e resistono le immagini, arrivando a noi, toccandoci. La sabbia sparsa lungo il percorso resta sui nostri passi anche quando ce ne andiamo, come la storia passata, che ci segue, anche se a volte non vorremmo fosse così, e trattiene traccia del nostro passaggio. Parte dell’istallazione è dedicata agli oggetti: cosa raccontano i suoni che si sono depositati nelle loro fibre? Quali tracce invisibili lasciano su di esse i corpi, le storie, le assenze? Sono stati registrati i suoni prodotti da questi materiali attraverso manipolazioni ravvicinate, ispirate alla pratica dell’ASMR, spesso su supporto analogico. Le registrazioni includono anche i rumori ambientali dei magazzini in cui questi oggetti sono abitualmente conservati e non sono state sottoposte ad alcun trattamento in post-produzione. L’intervento propone un ascolto che interroga il modo in cui le istituzioni conservano, selezionano e talvolta rimuovono i segni del proprio passato.
