Site-specific installation – environmental dimensions: multichannel audio, essence diffusers, natural materials

FIAMMAZZE is a site-specific installation that combines sound with a material and sensory component.

Starting from the concept of the bioacoustics of a territory (which refers to the set of sounds produced by living beings inhabiting a specific territory), I decided to investigate the Val di Fiemme area, and in particular Cavalese, through a female lens. Thanks to the collaboration of a group of women from Cavalese, together with sound artist Mauro Diciocia, we collected a series of women’s stories linked to the territory—autobiographical or otherwise, from the present and the past, true or invented. We associated each story with a sound object, imagined and created together with these women. The soundscape thus created inhabited the spaces of the museum through a multi-channel sound installation. Tracks composed of material and natural elements, recounting the deep connection between the female component and nature present in the valley, connected the various sound objects, fluidifying and expanding the architectural space of the museum, and composing a concept of forest in the Swiss pine room. The presence of the forest was also evoked through the sense of smell, suggesting distant and primordial memories: essences of Swiss pine, spruce, silver fir, and mountain pine, scents deeply linked to the territory, were diffused throughout the environment to complete the immersion in this space, both real and imagined. In the exhibition brochure, a map guided museum visitors in their exploration of this ‘new space’, giving them the opportunity to read the stories that inspired us to imagine the sounds.

FIAMMAZZE è un’installazione site specific che mescola il suono ad una componente materica e sensoriale.

A partire dal concetto di bioacustica di un territorio (che si riferisce all’insieme dei suoni prodotti dagli esseri viventi abitanti un territorio specifico), ho deciso di indagare la zona della Val di Fiemme, e in particolare di Cavalese, con il filtro del femminile. Grazie alla collaborazione di un gruppo di donne di Cavalese, con il sound artist Mauro Diciocia abbiamo raccolto una serie di storie femminili legate al territorio – storie autobiografiche o meno, del presente e del passato, vere, o inventate. Ad ogni storia abbiamo associato un oggetto sonoro, immaginato e creato assieme a queste donne. Il paesaggio sonoro così creato ha abitato gli spazi del Museo attraverso un’installazione sonora multicanale. Delle tracce composte di elementi materici e naturali, racconto del profondo legame tra la componente femminile e la natura presente in Valle, connettevano tra loro i vari oggetti sonori, fluidificando ed espandendo lo spazio architettonico del museo, e componevano un concetto di bosco nella stanza del Cirmolo. La presenza del bosco viene evocata anche tramite il senso dell’olfatto, suggerendo ricordi lontani e primordiali: essenze di cirmolo, abete rosso, abete bianco e pino mugo, odori profondamente legati al territorio, erano diffusi nell’ambiente a completare l’immersione in questo spazio, reale e immaginato. Nel foglio di sala, una mappa guidava chi visitava il museo all’esplorazione di questo “spazio nuovo”, dando la possibilità di leggere anche le storie da cui siamo partiti nell’immaginare i suoni.
